Renewed Kentucky Lake Cruising

It seems I let time slip away.  At my age that is not a good habit.  Actually, we continue to cruise, primarily Kentucky Lake (Tenn River) with some cruising along the Lake Barkley (Cumberland River) at our leisurely pace of 7-8 mph.  We do get to see the "sites" for a long time.

This anchorage is quiet with good cooling wind from northwest. We did have a small storm cell roll in near dark with about 30 mph winds but no rain.  We tend to capture these events on camera in the understanding no one else has seen a storm approach over water.
Well, I suppose this was after the cell crossed our bow. Must be the wine again, again, again.  That seems to be the trend in our cruising, sun, beer, sun, beer, sunset, wine, food, wine, then nite nite!  Sound like a good day to me.

Do we have AA for boaters?  I plan my 12 steps along our deck checking on dogs, spiders, willow flies, dock lines etc. Come aboard, you can have some of my "steps".

At times the Captain must take a break and allow the crew to take the helm. Well, Bella had her first watch yesterday as we cruised up Kentucky Lake to Duncan Bay.  Like all good Captain's  I give my crew the benefit of the doubt about their attention to detail. However, the Captain must trust but verify. As you can see by the picture, this "scurvy Dog" was not attentive.  I mean, the chart is right in front of her.  Good thing the auto pilot was engaged or we may have run aground.  Retraining for watch standing is in order.
Now I am all for security and protection of the Homeland.  The Coasties were on patrol before 7 am. this morning, Sunday. I have taken notice of the quality boat they get to use.  Twin 225 hp motors, which in an inflatable boat, will fly.  I did not notice any armament but they are good to have in case of one of those "mayday" calls we all hope never to make.
Well, now that I feel better, I plan to return to my studies.  You know all that nautical stuff.  One must be aware of the sunsets with all the colors, like sailor beware if you see the wrong colors.  The wine tends to make me see in rainbow colors, must be the prism effect looking through a wine glass.
The above view was a bit unusual.  Appeared as if the bell line was electrified.  The sunset was a prior visit in a different bay but the sunset is typical of our views along Kentucky Lake.  We are fortunate to have two wonderful lakes to cruise and enjoy both rivers, Tennessee and Cumberland.

Well another post is complete.  I am considering starting another blog with the name "0 Regrets" which will be dedicated to our cruising. As we hope to sell the motorhome soon and the current blog name is just not appropriate.  However, I do not want to loose my loyal readers.  A press release will be posted upon any changes in blog and/or name. I am certain CNN will be impressed and cover the changes.

Happy sailing,
Capt. Barry, Adm.Denise, Deckhands Bella and Bailey

Cruising Fever

Weekend cruising is limited to the Tennessee River (KY lake) or Cumberland River (lake barkley).  Time seems to continue to be a limiting factor in our cruising. With a boat cruisng at 8 mph. distances are limited. We are exploring new waters with more cruising of the Cumberland River (Lake Barkley) nosing into bays with new anchoring opportunities.
The above picture is the maximum security prison at Eddyville,KY.  I can only imagine being prisoned there watching boaters cruising Lake Barkley every, every, day. Medival seems to be the best description.  We cruised by there on Saturday afternoon on our way to Eddy Creek Marina for an over night anchorage.  This did become a real party!!  We anchored behind the Party Barge waiting for the party to begin.  We had good water at about 14-18 ft. depth with good holding for an anchorage.

Well, the view above is Denise and Bailey swimming. Bailey had retreaved a block of wood and would not let go.  Of course they had on their life preservers floating in the Lake Barkley waters.  Bailey always enjoys the water.  She taught Denise to Swim.

Yep, that is the old guy walking the transient dock to our waiting dingy.  We had a good brunch at Eddy Creek Marina after a one hour wait to receive food.  Good food but one must wait on the weekend.  The party barge is ahead in the photo and is perfect for a Saturday night party, if not raining.

New picture of the 0 Regrets.  We seldom get an opportunity to view our little boat from afar. We have many compliments on our boat in several marinas and always enjoy the complimants of others.   We enjoy our little boat and are encouraged by the comments of others.
Denise captured this sunset from the party barge.  A real task after all those beers.  She is a real trouper on the party barge. I was just the security for the visit.

Well that is the weekend with our adventures.  We always envite all our friends along for the weekend, just so long as they only stay the weekend!!!  After all, even family smells like fish after 3 days.

Happy Sailing,
Barry, Denise, Bailey and Bella

Opportunistic Cruise

I must admit, the cruising bug has imbeded itself in my physic!  As is my custom I planned to stay another evening at our wonderful condo with the girls(Bella and Bailey).  My dear wife, Denise, has a real job and must report each Monday morning for duty.  I, luckily, can work many times remotely.

Well, the idea found itself rolling around in my head, why not spend the time aboard 0 Regrets?  The girls and I found ourselves aboard with plans to cruise a short distance and anchor for the evening.  And that we did.

Our impromptu cruise was only 1 mile, but we are enjoying a quiet and lovely anchorage.  We took the opportunity to visit friends who are camped nearby at Canal Campground for a few days.  Ronnie and Carolyn are long time friends who have retired and cruise in their land yacht(motorhome) during a good portion of the year. So being the industrious type, I rowed the dingy over for a short walk to their place.  I did leave the girls(deckhands) to guard the boat.  As you can see, they are on the job.
Work, work and more work!!!  They did feel neglected. Bailey continued to whine as I rowed the dingy away.  Maybe some extra treats for them with their Grog.

We enjoyed a quiet evening aboard.  Watched a little TV, yes we to have Direct TV.  But most of the evening we lounged on the bridge with a glass of wine(the deckhands got grog), watching the sunset over the green hills.

This time of year we do not need air conditioning aboard. We just open the hatches(with mosquito netting), windows and run a fan for a cool evening.  Seems our little girl, Bella, has found another entry to the cabin!!
The forward hatch, at the bow, open to the cabin.  Bella could enter this way, but a long jump down to the cabin sole.  She just wanted to see what I was up to.  Just a bit more wine, I think. And this was the first evening.

After an early rise, 6am, the girls needed to go for a walk.  Around the deck you know. We had to cruise back to Green Turtle Bay Marina for provisions. My lovely Admiral, Denise, suggested we just stay another evening.  Over much complaining and tears on my part, I relented and the girls agreed to anchor another evening.  One must do what one must do!
While anchored once again, in this bay of no name, we enjoyed a little boat work and tackled installing the outboard motor on the dingy.  Alas, it would not start.  I will have to enlist professional help in the marina if I cannot "fix" the problem.

While enjoying the fruits of our labors, wine, we lounged again on the bridge deck.  Bailey's ears perked up and we were nearly boarded by a gaggle of geese.  We did offer them some dog food and they enjoyed their devourers!  The girls watched in amazement.
No girls, do not jump!!!  As always we relaxed to the cabin for a little food and a catch up on evening news.  WORK, WORK WORK!!  The girls just caught some ZZZZ's and missed all the news.
We particularly like the warm glow of the hurricane lantern. This mood may be spoiled by the "glow" of the direct TV. So we spent another evening aboard 0 Regrets, anchored along the Canal Campground.  We plan for the Admiral to join us by the weekend for more of the same WORK.
As always, the invitation is open for all to join us as we cruise the lakes and rivers.  By October 2014, we may be in salt water along the panhandle of Florida.  We do want to get this little boat a bit "salty".

Happy sailing,

Barry, Denise, Bella and Bailey
